Building on feedback from the in-person event we recently hosted, we’re pleased to revisit this important topic virtually on Thursday 2nd July at 09:30.

In this session, co-hosted alongside the Mindful Business Charter, we will explore:

  • The prevalence and impact of domestic abuse in the workplace
  • What “good practice” looks like for organisations
  • Practical steps employers and leaders can take to support their people and reduce risk

Panellists:

  • Claire England, Dentons
  • Lorna Gavin FICRS, Chapter Consulting
  • Sharon Livermore MBE, Domestic Abuse Education
  • Ayesha Fordham, Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse (EIDA)
  • Video feature from Craig, a domestic abuse survivor

Suitable for: HR, wellbeing, D&I, risk, learning & development roles and anyone with an interest in the topic.

Synopsis: Domestic abuse remains a stigmatised and often hidden issue affecting a significant proportion of the population. Whilst it can still be viewed as a “women’s issue”, it affects people regardless of gender – around 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men. We therefore need both male and female voices speaking on the topic as victims and allies to help reduce the stigma.

Domestic abuse is complex, not confined to a single period and can even intensify from external factors. For example, research by Professor Stuart found a 38% rise in domestic abuse reports when the England football team lost during major tournaments, and a 26% increase when they won or drew.

Individuals who experience domestic abuse are often left with a “long shadow”, from legal processes, PTSD, counselling, and ongoing recovery, it often has lifelong consequences. It is almost certainly impacting people in every organisation, with real consequences for safety, wellbeing and performance at work.

Despite growing awareness, many colleagues still feel unable to speak openly, and workplaces are not always equipped to recognise or respond. Key questions for organisations include:

  • Can we identify the signs and respond appropriately?
  • Do our leaders and HR teams feel confident having these conversations?
  • Do we have a clear, practical policy and support framework in place?
